year plagued by injury and illness
Suffered a fractured vertebrae in his
neck in a practice session in May and missed two months
Fell ill during the
summer with Zoster, a condition affecting hearing and visionary senses and
causing temporary paralysis on one side of his face
Played just three
tournaments from July on.
Had a strong start to the season, reaching the fourth round of the
Australian Open for the second consecutive year, before losing to eventual
finalist Marat Safin,
7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.
In March, reached consecutive quarterfinals in Scottsdale (lost to
eventual champion Vince Spadea) and Indian Wells (defeated Radek Stepanek,
Robby Ginepri, Gason Gaudio and Taylor Dent, before falling to Irakli
Labadze).
Also reached the quarterfinals in Houston, where he lost to Andrei Pavel.
At a practice session with Robby Ginepri at the Masters Series Rome, he
slipped and hit the net post, suffering a neck injury that kept him out of
